Primeira paragem: o Jardim do Morro

Atravessar a pé

From Jardim do Morro to Downtown: a walking route between two riverbanks

Crossing the Luís I Bridge, opened in 1886, is the best way to link Gaia and Porto. A route for one evening.

The Luís I Bridge is more than 130 years old and is still the best way to get from Vila Nova de Gaia to Porto, and back. We made it the thread of an evening route.

An iron bridge with a story

Opened on 31 October 1886, the bridge was named after King Luís I, who reigned from 1861 to 1889. It was designed by the Belgian engineer Théophile Seyrig, a former partner of Gustave Eiffel, and replaced the Pensile Bridge, opened in 1843. It is about 385 metres long, with an arch of roughly 172 metres that, when it opened, ranked among the largest iron arches in the world. The upper deck, about 45 metres above the river, is shared by the Porto Metro and pedestrians, and the lower deck by cars and pedestrians.

First stop: Jardim do Morro

On the Gaia side, Jardim do Morro is one of the best viewpoints over Porto, looking across the river to the Ribeira and the bridge itself. It is a good place to start in the late afternoon, when the light changes. A few steps away, on Avenida da República, is our Pizzeria, open every day, for a relaxed dinner before or after your walk.

Crossing on foot

To feel the scale of the structure, cross by the upper deck, facing the city. The walk is short, but the height and the views call for taking it slowly. Down below, the lower deck is the alternative closest to the river.

Ending in Baixa

On the Porto side, Baixa is a few minutes away. That is where our Forneria is, on Travessa Bonjardim. On Fridays and Saturdays, when the evening stretches out, it is wise to book a table, which you can do online on the house’s page.
